Yamanouchi in Nagano prefecture is famous among foreign tourists for its wild snow monkeys

that bathe in the natural hot springs. There are 9 hot springs in the area and the town retains

its traditional Japanese atmosphere. Surrounded by beautiful mountains, you can enjoy

the picturesque national park and countryside. You are sure to see some unspoilt scenery.

Jigokudani Monkey Park

This is the only place in the world where you can see wild monkeys soaking in natural hot springs.

Their expressions and antics will keep you amused for hours.

The area is inhabited by about 160 monkeys.

The baby monkeys are so cute. The adults have a long leisurely soak.

Yudanaka is a transport terminal offering a variety of footbaths and baths for day-trip visitors.

Buying a pass lets you use the baths at 3 hotels without accommodation.

You can choose 3 facilities from among the members of the Yudanaka Onsen Tourism Association.

Situated next to Yudanaka Station, this bath facility for day trip visitors also offers a footbath.

Perfect location for relaxing while waiting for a train or for chatting with local residents.

This footbath is located in the grounds of Baio-ji Temple.

You will also find the Pin Shan Jizo footbath here.

If you rub the Jizo (stone statue) with your washcloth, it will bring you luck.

Yukeburi Jizo

is about 1 m high and will be placed in temples hotspring which has been flowing for 270 years since in the temple was built.

Legend sayes:

Dip a white cloth in the hotspring,

sooth your painful parts with it

and you will have Longer Life.

Located in the Joshinetsu National Park, Shiga Kogen is a mecca for skiing in winter and

trekking in summer. It is surrounded by 2,000m mountains and has more than 70 lakes.

It is a treasure house of nature offering all kinds of outdoor activities.

With its alpine plants, wetland plants and virgin forests,

Shiga Kogen in summer lets you experience dynamic nature.

There are 19 trekking courses, such as the 2-hour

Shizen Tansho Course which takes you round 6 lakes and wetlands.


Covering 19 ski areas, Shiga Kogen is one of the largest ski resorts in Japan and

offers some of the best quality snow. The combined lift pass is valid on all 53 lifts and gondolas.

There is also a free shuttle bus service.

Kita Shiga Kogen is situated north of Shiga Kogen. It’s a great place for winter sports and

enjoying the mountainside. You can try your hand at farming or

local residents will teach you traditional crafts based on their coexistence with nature.

The area includes Ryuo Ski Park and X-JAM Takai Fuji, popular with snowboarders,

Yomase Onsen Ski Resort, famous for ski competitions, and Komaruyama Ski Resort,

suited to beginners. Open from December until early May.

The ropeway, one of the largest in the world, can carry up to 166 passengers.



Kita Shiga Kogen is noted for Sukagawa Soba.

Made with pokeweed leaves (synurus pungens) as the binding agent, the noodles are firm and

slide down easily.

Takes about 1.5-2 hours, including tasting. Reservation required.

Fruit picking

Cherries, blueberries, grapes and apples.

From June to November you can enjoy fruit picking in orchards around Kita Shiga Kogen.

Thanks to the mineral-rich melted snow water and the extreme temperature difference between day

and night, the fruit is juicy and sweet.

bamboo craft

Local experts will teach you this traditional craft handed down in this area through the ages.

The artifacts are all made by hand. They are very strong and the more you use them,

the more they turn light brown and the more you become attached to them.

Hayasoba, a local food, is served for lunch.
